Broken iPhone charging cable: can it be repaired, and why do cables fail?

A broken, frayed or crushed iPhone charging cable should be replaced, not repaired; a taped cable carries a risk of short circuit, overheating and fire. Cables usually fail at the bend near the plug. Use a certified cable; if the iPhone still does not charge with a new cable, its port should be checked.
