Phone glass cracked but touch still works: is it fine to wait?

If the glass is cracked but touch and the picture work, you can use the phone for a short while; but cracks grow, dust and moisture get in and the damage can reach the panel. At this stage, on most models only the front glass needs replacing. If you wait, the whole screen may need replacing.

01Risks of carrying on

  • The crack spreads. Daily use and small knocks extend the crack.
  • Dust and moisture get in. Broken glass no longer seals the inside; moisture can affect touch and the panel.
  • The panel gets damaged. Broken glass pieces can press on the panel below.
  • You can cut yourself. Broken edges are sharp.

02Temporary measures

  1. Clear tape. Stick clear tape or a new screen protector over the cracked area.
  2. Case. A case that wraps the edges reduces the effect of new knocks.
  3. Avoid pressure. Do not carry the phone in a back pocket or a tight bag.
  4. Keep it away from water. Cracked glass means no water resistance.

03When does it become urgent?

If stains or coloured lines appear, touch stops responding in one area or the screen taps by itself, the crack has reached the panel. At that point replacing only the glass is not enough; the whole screen is replaced.
