Forgot your iPhone passcode: unlocking it the legal way

There is no safe, legal way to “crack” an iPhone passcode; with a forgotten passcode, the iPhone is erased and set up again. Use “Forgot Passcode?” on the lock screen or recovery mode with a computer. Erasing deletes data; your data comes back from a backup. Setup needs your Apple Account password.

01Erasing from the lock screen

  1. Wrong passcode attempts. After several attempts, “iPhone Unavailable” appears.
  2. “Forgot Passcode?” Tap the option at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Apple Account password. Enter your account password and confirm the erase.
  4. Set it up again. Restore your backup during setup.

The iPhone needs a cellular or Wi-Fi connection for this option; menu names vary by iOS version.
