Dark screen on your phone: tell the fault apart with a torch test

A dark screen usually means the picture is there but the screen light is not on. If you can make out a faint picture when you shine a torch at an angle, the fault is most likely in the light circuit; if there is no picture at all, the panel or its connection should be checked.

01Torch test: is there a picture?

  1. Turn the phone on. If there is sound or vibration, the phone is working.
  2. Hold a torch. Shine another phone’s torch at the screen at an angle.
  3. Look closely. Can you make out icons or text, even faintly?

02Try the settings first

Rule out simple causes before assuming a fault. Push the brightness slider all the way up, turn off auto-brightness and any power-saving mode, and try again. Restart the phone. A screen that looks dark even at full brightness is covered in phone screen dark at full brightness.

03Where can the fault be?

  • Backlight: On LCD screens the light layer behind the picture can fail; then the screen is replaced.
  • Backlight IC: If the light circuit on the board fails, the screen stays dark even though it is fine; it is fixed with an IC chip repair.
  • Connection: After a drop the screen cable may have moved.
  • Liquid contact: Moisture can corrode the light circuit.

OLED screens have no separate light layer; a dark picture usually points to a panel or board fault.

The phone is on but the screen is dark. Why?

The picture may be forming while the light stays off. If you can see a faint picture with a torch at an angle, the backlight or backlight IC is suspect.

Can a setting fix a dark screen?

Yes, if brightness or power saving is the cause. If the torch test shows a picture and settings do not help, it is a hardware fault.

Does a new screen fix a backlight IC fault?

No. If the fault is on the board, a new screen stays dark too; that is why diagnosis comes first.

Will the repair delete my data?
