iPhone error 9 (NAND fault): how is it repaired?

Error 9, shown while updating or restoring an iPhone with a computer, means the connection dropped during the process. First try another cable and port, update the computer and try again in recovery mode. If the error continues, the problem is usually hardware; a faulty storage chip (NAND) is a common cause.
