iPhone hard reset: what it is and what it does

“Hard reset” is used in two ways: force restarting a frozen iPhone with the buttons does not delete data, while a factory reset erases everything. If the screen is frozen, try a force restart first. If you are selling the phone, back up, sign out of your Apple Account, then use Erase All Content and Settings.

02Force restart

  1. iPhone 8 and later. Press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  2. iPhone 7. Hold the side and volume down buttons together until the logo appears.
  3. iPhone 6s and earlier. Hold the Home and side or top buttons together.

03Factory reset

Back up first, then tap Settings › General › Transfer or Reset › Erase All Content and Settings. Your Apple Account password is asked. Menu names vary by iOS version.
