01First, find where the problem is
Turn on speakerphone during a call. This single test largely shows where the problem is:
- Clear on speaker, quiet in the earpiece: the earpiece or dirt in front of it is the problem.
- Quiet or broken on speaker too: the network or the other person’s phone is the problem; call again from another place or at another time.
- No sound at all: the audio may be going to another device, or there is a fault on the board.
02Step-by-step fix
- Turn up the volume. Press the volume buttons during the call and make sure the volume indicator appears on screen.
- Check Bluetooth. Turn off Settings › Bluetooth, or choose iPhone from the audio option on the call screen.
- Disconnect accessories. Unplug headphones, adapters or cables.
- Clean the earpiece. Gently clean the earpiece grille with a soft, clean, dry brush.
- Remove the case and protector. On a new iPhone, also remove the protective film on the front and back.
- Restart and update. Restart the iPhone, then update iOS in Settings › General › Software Update.
03When does the earpiece need replacing?
If, after cleaning and these steps, sound is clear on speaker but still quiet in the earpiece, the earpiece part may be worn or damaged. This is common after drops, liquid contact and earlier repairs.
