No sound when messages arrive on iPhone: how to fix it

If your iPhone makes no sound when a message arrives, check that silent mode and Focus are off. Then make sure Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Text Tone is not “None” and that Sounds are on in Messages notifications. If one person’s messages are silent, Hide Alerts is on in that chat.

01Check the settings in order

  1. Silent mode. Check the side switch or the Action button.
  2. Focus. Turn off any active Focus in Control Centre.
  3. Text tone. Choose a sound in Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Text Tone.
  4. Notification sounds. Turn on Settings › Notifications › Messages › Sounds.
  5. Hide Alerts. Open the chat and tap the person’s name; Hide Alerts should be off.

Menu names vary by iOS version.
