iPhone screen backlight bleed: what causes it?

Backlight bleed is when the backlight of an LCD iPhone shows through at the edges or as patches. A faint glow at the edges on a dark screen can be visible; if there are clear patches or bright areas, a knock, a bent frame, a swollen battery or a poor screen may be the cause. Persistent bleed needs a screen replacement.

  1. Test it. Open a fully black image in a dark room and look at the edges.
  2. Check the battery. If the screen is lifting, do not charge the phone.
  3. Remove the case. A tight case can press on the screen edge.
  4. Send a photo. Send a photo of the bleed and your model on WhatsApp.
