Phone camera shows a black screen: how to fix it

If the camera app opens but the screen stays black, the cause may be software, a permission or the camera module. Testing the front and rear cameras separately and restarting the phone usually show straight away where the problem is.

01Step-by-step fix

  1. Check the lens. A case or dirt may cover it; wipe the lens with a soft cloth.
  2. Close and reopen the app. Close the Camera app in the background too.
  3. Switch cameras. Test the front and rear cameras separately.
  4. Close other apps. If another app is using the camera, it can lock up.
  5. Restart and update the phone.
  6. Clear the cache on Android. Settings › Apps › Camera › Storage › Clear cache.
  7. Try Safe Mode. If it works in Safe Mode, an app you installed is the cause.
