01When does it go dark?
| When? | Possible cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| After a few seconds without touch | Screen timeout | Lengthen it in display settings |
| In calls, before it reaches your ear | Proximity sensor | Check the protector and dirt in front of the sensor |
| Outdoors, while gaming or charging | Heat protection | Cool the phone in the shade |
| Brightness drops by itself | Adaptive brightness or the light sensor | Turn the setting off and on; clean in front of the sensor |
| When the battery is low | Power saving mode | Check the power saving settings |
Menu names vary by manufacturer and version.
02In front of the sensors
The adaptive brightness and proximity sensors sit at the top of the screen, near the front camera. A thick or lifted protector, dirt or a crack over this area can make the screen go dark at the wrong time. Going dark during calls is covered in turn off proximity sensor: fix it first.
03If the settings are fine
If the screen is dark at full brightness, see phone screen dark at full brightness; if it flickers first and then goes dark, see phone screen flickers then goes black.
