Phone dropped in water and touch not working: first steps and your data

If the touch screen stops working after your phone falls in water, take it out, dry the outside, do not charge it and do not force it on. Even without touch, a backup is often possible with voice control or a computer. Then have the device checked as soon as possible.

01What to do in the first minutes

  1. Get it out. Take the phone out of the water at once and remove the case.
  2. Dry it. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth; tap it gently with the charging port facing down to let water out.
  3. Do not charge it. Plugging a cable into a wet port can cause a short circuit.
  4. Do not force it. If touch does not work, do not keep pressing the screen; wrong buttons may be pressed.

02Why does touch stop working?

When water gets between the glass and the display panel, the touch layer receives false signals. The screen then either ignores you or taps by itself. It may recover once the water dries; but moisture that reaches under the screen can leave corrosion over time. 03How to back up without touch

  • iPhone: If Siri is on, say “Turn on Voice Control” to control the phone by voice. You can also try a backup on a computer it has been connected to before.
  • Android: Many models accept a mouse through a USB OTG adapter; use it to unlock the screen and back up. Menu names can differ by model.
  • Cloud backup: If automatic backup is on, your latest backup may already be in your account.

04When to bring it in

If touch has not recovered after drying, if stains or lines appear on the screen, or if the phone is warm, the liquid may have reached the screen or the board. Diagnosis is free and shows whether the screen or the board is affected. You can find the screen options on our screen replacement page.
