Water spilled on your iPhone and touch not working: iPhone-specific steps

If touch stops working after water spills on your iPhone, dry it and do not plug in a cable. When the iPhone detects liquid in the port, it can show an alert and stop wired charging. Water resistance is not permanent; if touch does not recover once dry, the screen or board should be checked.

01The iPhone liquid detection alert

Newer iPhone models show an alert when they detect liquid in the charging port and stop wired charging. This is a protective feature. Tap the phone gently with the port facing down to let water out and wait for it to dry; do not plug in a cable meanwhile.

02Why was water resistance not enough?

iPhone water resistance is tested under specific conditions and is not permanent; it can decrease with normal wear, drops and on devices opened before. Soapy, hot or sugary liquids affect the seals more. So touch can be affected even on a water-resistant iPhone.

03What can you do without touch?

  1. Dry it. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth and remove the case.
  2. Let it rest. Leave it somewhere dry and airy; do not apply heat.
  3. Voice Control. If Siri is on, say “Turn on Voice Control” to control the phone by voice and back up.
  4. Computer. Try backing up to a computer the phone has been paired with before.
