Phone has signal but cannot make calls: what to do

If the signal bars look full but calls do not connect, the cause is usually a setting or the status of your line. Call forwarding, call barring and line restrictions are the most common causes; rarely, a hardware fault gives the same symptom.

01Try these first

  1. Restart the phone. The network connection is set up again.
  2. Check airplane mode. Turn it off; you cannot make calls in airplane mode even with Wi-Fi on.
  3. Check call forwarding. On Android: Phone app › Settings › Supplementary services (or Call settings) › Call forwarding; on iPhone: Settings › Phone › Call Forwarding.
  4. Check call barring. In the same menus, turn off call barring or call restrictions if they are on.
  5. Try VoLTE / 4G calling. Switch this option off and on in mobile network settings.

Menu names vary by brand and software version.

Why can I not make calls when I have signal?

The most common causes are call forwarding or barring settings, a line restriction and airplane mode. Check your settings and your line.

Messages go through but calls do not. What does it mean?

There may be a problem with call settings or the VoLTE option; your carrier can also tell you whether calls are restricted on your line.

Can this be a hardware problem?

Rarely. If the SIM works fine in another phone, the phone’s network hardware should be checked; diagnosis is free.

Does the VoLTE setting affect calls?

It can. Turn VoLTE (calls over 4G) off and on in the mobile network settings; if your line does not support it, leave it off.
