Phone dropped and the screen went black: what to do

If the screen went black after a drop, first find out whether the phone is still on: if it rings or vibrates when called, it works and the screen is the problem. If a force restart does not help, the screen or its connection needs replacing; your data is usually safe.

01Is the phone on, or is it the screen?

  1. Call your phone. If it rings, vibrates or plays a notification sound, it is on.
  2. Plug it in. A charging sound or vibration means the phone works.
  3. Force restart. On iPhone: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button; on most Android phones: hold power and volume down together.

The button order varies by model.

Usually not; data is usually preserved during the repair. Still, you need to back up before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

The glass is fine but the screen is black. Why?

The inner screen or its connection may have been damaged by the drop even if the outer glass looks fine.

Do I need a screen or a front glass replacement?

If there is no picture or there are spots, the screen needs replacing. If the picture is fine and only the glass is cracked, a front glass replacement may be enough.
