Crackling from the phone speaker: find the source with 4 tests

Finding where the crackle comes from makes the fix easier. First work out whether the sound comes from the bottom speaker or the call earpiece, then listen to the same audio on headphones. If it is clean on headphones, the speaker is at fault; if it crackles there too, the file or software may be the cause.

01Test 1: which speaker?

Phones usually have two sound outputs: the bottom speaker for music and ringtones, and the earpiece at the top for calls. Play some music and turn the phone over; listen to where the crackle comes from. If callers sound crackly, suspect the earpiece; if the crackle is also there on speakerphone, suspect the bottom speaker.

02Test 2: compare with headphones

Listen to the same song on wired or Bluetooth headphones.

03Tests 3 and 4: volume and app

  • Volume: If the crackle starts only at high volume, the speaker membrane may be worn or torn.
  • App: If it happens in one app only, update the app; if other apps sound clean, the hardware is not at fault.

04When is a repair needed?

Can a software update fix speaker crackling?

If the source is software, it can. Clean sound on headphones but crackling on the speaker points to a hardware fault.

When the speaker membrane is worn or torn, it cannot handle the vibration at high volume and crackles.

Most likely the earpiece (top speaker). If speakerphone sounds clean, the bottom speaker is fine.
