Samsung speaker crackling: the test menu and the fix

On many Samsung phones you can find the source of speaker crackling with the hidden test menu: type *#0*# in the Phone app and the speaker and earpiece are tested separately. If the test crackles too, the fault is hardware; if the test is clean, check the sound settings.

01Test with the menu

  1. Open the Phone app. Type *#0*# on the keypad.
  2. Speaker test. In the menu, tap “Speaker” or a similar speaker test; a sound plays.
  3. Earpiece test. The “Receiver” test checks the top speaker (earpiece).
  4. Compare. Note which one crackles.

The test menu exists on many Galaxy models; on some models or carrier software it may not open.

03If the test crackles too

If you hear crackling in the test too, the speaker membrane may be worn, dirt may have built up in the grille, or there was liquid contact.
