Phone speaker crackling: a step-by-step fix

A crackling phone speaker is usually caused by dirt in the grille, liquid, a vibrating case or a speaker strained at high volume (blown). First gently clean the grille, remove the case and try another app. If it crackles at every volume and in every app, the speaker should be replaced.

  1. Clean the grille. Gently clean the speaker holes with a dry, soft brush.
  2. Remove the case. Test without it; the vibration may come from the case.
  3. Another app. Test music, video and call sound separately.
  4. Change the volume. If it only crackles at full volume, the speaker may be strained.
  5. Safe mode. If it stops in Android safe mode, an app is the cause.
