How to calibrate the battery on a Samsung phone

When a Samsung’s battery percentage suddenly drops or the phone shuts down at 20 percent, “calibration” is the first thing people think of. Recent phones do not need manual battery calibration; an inconsistent gauge is usually a sign of a worn battery. Check the battery condition first.

Key points
  • Recent Samsung phones do not need manual battery calibration.
  • An inconsistent percentage is usually a sign of a worn battery.
  • The diagnostics tests in the Samsung Members app show the battery condition.
  • To refresh the gauge, charge it fully once and use it; do not repeat this often.
  • If it shuts down suddenly or swells, the fix is a battery replacement.

01What is battery calibration?

The phone estimates the remaining energy in the battery and shows it as a percentage. When the estimate drifts from reality, the gauge becomes inconsistent. “Calibration” used to be recommended to fix this; on recent phones, battery management does it by itself.

02Check the battery condition

  1. Open Samsung Members. Start the diagnostics (device check) tests in the Support section.
  2. Choose the battery test. The result shows the battery condition, for example “good” or “weak”.
  3. Check battery usage. In Settings › Battery, see which apps use the most.

Menu names may differ between One UI versions.

03Refreshing the gauge

If the gauge is inconsistent, charge the phone to 100 percent once and use it normally; the gauge usually corrects itself. Draining the phone completely often wears the battery more, so do not make it a habit.

04When is a battery replacement needed?

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Does a Samsung need battery calibration?

Not on recent phones. If the gauge is inconsistent, charge it fully once and use it; if the problem continues, the battery is worn.

02

Is there a battery calibration code?

There is no official calibration code recommended for users. Changing settings with service codes can cause problems.

03

Will a Samsung battery replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

04

Does Adaptive battery protect the battery?

Adaptive battery limits apps you rarely use so the charge lasts longer; it does not stop the battery from wearing out.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
