Screen responding without being touched: find the trigger

A screen that responds without you touching it is called ghost touch. Sometimes there is a simple trigger: a poor charger, a lifted screen protector, moisture or an app. Rule them out one by one; if it continues, the screen’s touch layer may be faulty.

03Ruling out apps: safe mode

On Android, safe mode starts with system apps only. If the problem stops in safe mode, a recently installed app is the trigger. How to enter safe mode varies by manufacturer; usually you long-press “Power off” in the power menu. On iPhone, updating the software and restarting are the first steps.

04If it is hardware

If none of the triggers is to blame, the touch layer, the screen or its connection may be faulty. It also happens on devices fitted with compatible screens. Fixes to try at home are in ghost touch: screen moving by itself, and the screen options on our screen replacement page.

What is ghost touch?
