How to turn on a phone with a broken power or Home button

The easiest way to turn on a phone with a broken power or Home button is to plug it in; many phones start by themselves when charged while off. Once it is on, the on-screen accessibility menu can do the buttons’ jobs; the permanent fix is repairing the button.

Key points
  • Plug the phone into a charger or computer while off; many models start this way.
  • On iPhone, AssistiveTouch lets you lock, restart and go Home from the screen.
  • On Android, the accessibility menu offers power menu and lock screen buttons.
  • The button may be stuck because of the case or dirt; remove the case and try.
  • Back up your data before the repair.

01Turning the phone on without the button

  1. Plug it in. Plug the phone in while off; many models start within seconds.
  2. Connect it to a computer. Some phones also start when connected to a computer.
  3. Let the battery run down. If it is on and you cannot turn it off, once it dies you can charge it so it starts again.

Behaviour varies by model; some phones only show the charging screen.

02Using it without buttons once it is on

  • iPhone: AssistiveTouch. Turn on Settings › Accessibility › Touch › AssistiveTouch. The on-screen button lets you lock, go Home, restart and change volume.
  • Android: Accessibility menu. Turn on the accessibility menu in Settings › Accessibility; power menu and lock screen buttons appear on the screen.
  • Double tap to wake. On many Android phones, double-tapping the screen turns it on.

Menu names vary by brand and software version.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
