- Water resistance is not permanent; it declines over time even if the phone is never opened.
- IP67 and IP68 describe how a new phone performed in lab tests with fresh water.
- A screen, battery or back glass replacement opens the phone, and the adhesive seal is replaced.
- Water resistance cannot be assured after a repair; keep protecting the phone from water.
- Do not charge a wet phone until it is dry; on iPhone, Apple recommends waiting at least 5 hours.
01What do IP67 and IP68 mean?
An IP code shows how well a device resists dust and water. The first digit is for dust, the second for water.
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| 6 (first digit) | Dust-tight |
| 7 (second digit) | Withstands brief immersion in water up to 1 metre |
| 8 (second digit) | Withstands immersion deeper than 1 metre under conditions set by the manufacturer |
Depth and time vary by model; your phone’s specifications list them. These ratings come from lab tests on new phones. Both Apple and Samsung say water resistance is not permanent and may decline with normal wear.
02How does a screen replacement affect water resistance?
The screen and back glass are held to the frame by a thin adhesive seal around their edges. When the phone is opened for a repair, this seal is broken. In a good repair, the old adhesive is cleaned off and a new one made for the model is applied.
- Screen replacement. The front is opened; the seal around the screen is replaced.
- Battery and back glass replacement. Depending on the model, the phone opens from the front or the back; the seal on that side is replaced.
- Charging port, camera and button repairs. The phone is opened here too, so the same applies.
Even so, the factory pressure test cannot be repeated in a repair. The safest approach is to treat a repaired phone as if it were not water resistant. For the repair itself, see our screen replacement page.
03How to protect your phone from water after a repair
The advice manufacturers give for new phones matters even more for a repaired one:
- Do not swim or shower with the phone, or use it around pressurised water.
- Keep it away from hot, humid places such as saunas and steam rooms.
- Keep soap, perfume, sunscreen and alcohol-based liquids off it; Samsung also advises avoiding sea and pool water.
- Drops and knocks weaken the seal; use a sturdy case.
04What to do if your phone gets wet
- Dry it. Wipe the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth and take off the case.
- Let it dry. Leave the phone in a cool, airy place with the port facing down.
- Do not charge it. Do not connect a charging cable or accessory until the phone is completely dry. On iPhone, Apple recommends waiting at least 5 hours before wired charging.
- Watch for signs. Muffled sound, fog or spots on the screen can mean moisture is still inside. For more, see our guide on moisture in a phone.
