“Made in China” or refurbished screen: the real difference is the part type

Calling a screen “made in China” is misleading: many phones and parts are made there anyway; the real difference is the part type. A refurbished screen reuses an original panel with renewed glass; an OEM (compatible) screen is a compatible panel from another maker. You are told which one before approval.

01How is a refurbished screen prepared?

  1. The original panel is separated. If the panel under the cracked glass is intact, it is separated.
  2. The glass, and the frame if needed, are renewed. The panel is cleaned and new glass is bonded.
  3. It is tested. Display, touch and colours are checked.

So in a refurbished screen the panel that makes the image is original; the outer layer is what changes.

03What to check on a refurbished screen at collection

  • Shadows or marks on a grey or white screen: Check whether the panel carries marks from earlier use.
  • Edges: There should be no bubbles or lifting at the edge of the glass.
  • Touch: Every area of the screen, including the edges, should respond.
  • Invoice: The type of part fitted should be stated.
