Android “System UI has stopped” error: how to fix it

The “System UI has stopped” or “isn’t responding” message is usually a software hang. Restart the phone, update the system and apps, and remove any launcher, theme or widget you installed recently. If it continues in safe mode, a reset after backing up is the last resort.

01Step-by-step fix

  1. Restart. Hold the power button and restart.
  2. Update. Install the system update and Play Store updates.
  3. Undo recent changes. Remove a newly installed launcher, theme or widget.
  4. Cache. In Settings › Apps, show system apps and clear the cache of the app concerned.
  5. Storage. Free up space if storage is full.
  6. Safe mode. If the problem stops in safe mode, remove recent apps one by one.
