Can a phone screen crack by itself?

A phone screen rarely cracks truly by itself; a small edge crack from an earlier knock, bending in a back pocket, a sudden temperature change or a swollen battery pushing the screen makes a crack appear later. If the screen is lifting or the case is bulging, do not charge the phone and have the battery checked.
