Downloading YouTube videos: legal and safe ways

YouTube does not allow downloading videos other than through its own download button. The legal ways are watching offline in the app with YouTube Premium and downloading your own uploads from YouTube Studio. Third-party downloaders both break the terms and carry a malware risk.

Key points
  • YouTube only allows downloads through its own download button.
  • With YouTube Premium, videos can be watched offline in the app.
  • You can download your own videos from YouTube Studio.
  • Downloader apps and sites carry malware and ad risks.
  • Downloading and sharing someone else’s video without permission can breach copyright.

02Downloading your own video

  1. Open YouTube Studio. Sign in with your account.
  2. Content. Find the video in the videos list.
  3. Options. Choose “Download” from the options menu next to the video.

Menu names vary by version.

03Protect your phone

  1. Official stores. Install apps only from the App Store and Google Play.
  2. Unknown sources. On Android, keep installs from unknown sources turned off.
  3. Storage. Offline videos take up space; full storage slows the phone down.

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
