How to tell if a phone screen is aftermarket: tests you can do at home

A few tests tell you, to a large extent, whether the fitted screen is aftermarket. On iPhone, Parts and Service History shows the screen’s status. On a phone with an OLED screen, if a black screen glows faintly in a dark room, an LCD part may have been fitted. The fingerprint reader and colours also give clues.

Key points
  • On iPhone, check Parts and Service History.
  • If a black screen glows on an OLED phone, it may be an LCD part.
  • If the in-display fingerprint reader fails, the part should be checked.
  • Compare colour and brightness side by side with the same model.
  • The type of part fitted should be on the invoice.

01Five tests

  1. Parts and Service History (iPhone). Under Settings › General › About, supported models show whether the screen is genuine or an “unknown part”.
  2. Dark room test. Hold the phone in a dark room on a fully black image. On a model with an OLED screen, a faint glow may mean an LCD-technology part was fitted.
  3. In-display fingerprint. On phones with an in-display reader, if the reader fails or is very slow, the fitted part may be incompatible.
  4. Side-by-side comparison. Compare colour and brightness on a white page with a phone of the same model.
  5. Edges and invoice. Look for a gap at the edge or a thick bezel; check whether the invoice states the part type.

02What the results tell you

Test resultWhat it may mean
“Unknown part” in parts historyA non-genuine or unverified screen
A black screen glows on an OLED modelA compatible screen with LCD technology
In-display fingerprint failsA part incompatible with the reader
Washed-out colours, grey blacksA compatible panel

With a well-done replacement, not every test gives a clear answer. Problems by symptom are in iPhone aftermarket screen problems, the difference between screen types in aftermarket, used and original screens, and whether an iPhone has been opened in how to tell if an iPhone has been repaired.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

Can I be certain the screen is aftermarket?

The tests give a good idea; with a well-done replacement, a clear answer is not always possible.

02

How is the dark room test done?

Open a fully black image in a dark room; on an OLED model, a faint glow may mean an LCD part was fitted.

03

Where can I see whether an iPhone screen is genuine?

On supported models, in Parts and Service History under Settings › General › About.

04

Will a screen replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).

Phone works but the screen is black: what to do

If your phone rings or vibrates but the screen is black, the phone is on; the problem is the screen or its connection. Force restart and charge it first. Shine a torch close to the screen in the dark: a faint picture means a backlight fault. If it started after a drop or liquid, the screen is usually replaced.
