How to tell if a phone battery is dead or faulty

A dead or faulty battery shows itself most clearly through sudden shutdowns, swelling and charge that runs out very fast. If the phone shows no reaction when plugged in, the battery may be completely drained. The battery health screen and a diagnosis show whether it needs replacing.

02How to check it yourself

  1. Check battery health. On iPhone: Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging; on Android: the battery or device care section.
  2. Note the shutdown level. Write down the percentage at which the phone turns off.
  3. Look at the frame. Check for gaps at the edges or a bulging screen.
  4. Charge for longer. Leave a fully drained phone on charge for 30 minutes and try to turn it on.
