iPhone 7 earpiece volume low: test the two speakers separately

On the iPhone 7, the top earpiece also works as a second speaker for music and video. So you can test whether the earpiece is quiet by playing music: if the top end is quiet, the earpiece or dirt in front of it is the cause. If the speaker button looks greyed out during calls, the audio IC should be checked.

01Test the two speakers separately

  1. Play music. Hold the phone sideways and put your ear to the top and bottom ends in turn.
  2. Compare. If the top end is clearly quieter than the bottom, the earpiece is the cause.
  3. Try a call. If sound is clear on speaker but quiet at your ear, the earpiece or dirt in front of it is again suspect.

03What should you do?

  • Gently clean the earpiece mesh with a dry, soft, clean brush.
  • Remove the case and screen protector and try.
  • Turn off Bluetooth and make sure sound comes from the iPhone.
