iPhone caller sounds distorted: earpiece or network?

If the other person sounds crackly, choppy or robotic on calls, the problem may be the earpiece (top speaker) or the network. Listen to the same call on speaker: if speaker sound is clean, suspect the earpiece; if it is distorted on speaker too, suspect the connection or network.

02What you can try at home

  1. Clean the earpiece grille. Wipe it gently with a soft, dry brush.
  2. Check the protector. If a screen protector covers the earpiece opening, sound is muffled.
  3. Turn off Bluetooth. Audio may be going to connected headphones or a car.
  4. Change network. Under Settings › Cellular, switch between 4G and 5G and try again; update iOS.

03When is the earpiece replaced?

If speaker sound is clean but the earpiece is distorted and cleaning did not help, an earpiece replacement may be needed. When there is no sound or very low sound, see iPhone cannot hear caller or low call volume. For audio faults on the board, see our IC chip repair page.
