iPhone no sound from the earpiece during calls: does it cut out at your ear?

If sound on your iPhone cuts out only at your ear, the earpiece is not always the cause. If the proximity sensor does not darken the screen, your cheek can tap the mute or speaker button. A protector or dirt over the sensor, or the call moving to Bluetooth, gives the same symptom; then the earpiece is checked.

02Try in order

  1. In front of the sensor. Check for a protector or dirt over the area next to the front camera; details are in iPhone proximity sensor setting.
  2. Call Audio Routing. Check Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Call Audio Routing is set to Automatic.
  3. Bluetooth. Choose iPhone from the audio option on the call screen.
  4. Earpiece mesh. Clean it gently with a dry, soft brush.

Menu names can vary with the iOS version.

03If these are fine

If there is no sound from the earpiece at all while the sensor and settings are fine, the earpiece or its connection is checked. Quiet call sound is covered in iPhone: cannot hear caller or low call volume.
