Is a swollen iPhone battery covered by warranty? What to know

On an iPhone within warranty, a battery that swelled without any impact, liquid or unauthorised repair marks may be assessed as a manufacturing fault; the manufacturer or an authorised service decides. Out of warranty, or if it is not covered, the battery can be replaced. Either way, unplug the phone and stop using it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01

My iPhone battery swelled within warranty; will it be replaced free?

Without damage marks it may be assessed as a manufacturing fault; the manufacturer or an authorised service decides.

02

Does the warranty cover a battery that swelled after a drop?

Impact marks can count as accidental damage and change the assessment. Ask an authorised service for a definite answer.

03

Does an independent replacement affect the warranty?

On a device within warranty, an unauthorised repair can affect the assessment; once the warranty has expired, this is not a concern.

04

Will a battery replacement delete my data?

Data is usually preserved during a repair; still, you need to back up your data before the repair starts (backups are the customer’s responsibility).
