The lighter trick for phone repair: does it work, and why is it dangerous?

The “lighter trick” means zapping the screen with the spark from a lighter’s igniter, and it is not a repair method. The spark can damage the screen, touch layer and board parts, and a gas lighter near the battery is a fire risk. For ghost touch or spots on the screen, try the safe checks instead.

  1. Remove the protector. A bubbled or cracked protector can cause ghost touch.
  2. Clean it. Wipe the screen with a dry, soft cloth.
  3. Charger. If it happens while charging, try another charger.
  4. Restart. Restart the phone and update the software.
  5. Diagnosis. If it continues, the screen or connection should be checked.
