Phone shuts down in the cold: why and what to do

If your phone shuts down in the cold, the lithium-ion battery cannot deliver enough power at low temperatures; it may turn off even while showing charge. Carry it in an inside pocket and let it warm up by itself somewhere mild. If it also shuts down in mild weather, the battery is worn and should be checked.

  1. Carry it inside. Keep the phone in an inside pocket.
  2. Let it warm up. Leave a phone that shut down somewhere mild, then turn it on.
  3. Charge later. Do not charge it until it has warmed up.
  4. Check battery health. On iPhone check Settings › Battery › Battery Health.
