- A gyroscope measures the phone’s rotation speed.
- An accelerometer measures tilt and straight-line movement; the two work together.
- Every iPhone from iPhone 4 onwards has a gyroscope.
- Some entry-level Android phones have no gyroscope.
- If the gyroscope stops working after a drop, it needs a diagnosis.
01Gyroscope vs accelerometer
| Sensor | What it measures | Where it is used |
|---|---|---|
| Gyroscope | Rotation speed | Games, augmented reality, 360° video |
| Accelerometer | Tilt and straight-line movement | Screen rotation, step counter |
| Compass | Direction | Maps and navigation |
02Does your phone have a gyroscope?
- Check the specifications. The maker’s page should list “gyroscope” or “gyro”.
- Test menu. Some Samsung models have a sensor test in the menu opened with *#0*#.
- Try an app. If a 360° video or augmented reality app does not follow your movement, there may be no gyroscope or it may be faulty.
