iPhone Apple logo flashing and it will not turn on: fixing a boot loop

If your iPhone keeps flashing the Apple logo and will not start, force restart it and charge it for at least half an hour first. If that does not help, connect it to a computer and in recovery mode try “Update” first; this option tries to reinstall iOS without erasing your data. “Restore” erases the device.

011. Force restart and charge

On Face ID models: press and release volume up, press and release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Then charge the phone for at least half an hour with a sound cable. A low battery can also cause a logo loop.

  1. Connect to a computer. Open Finder on a Mac, or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows.
  2. Enter recovery mode. Use the force restart buttons but do not let go at the Apple logo; keep holding the side button until the computer screen appears.
  3. Choose Update. This option tries to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
  4. Avoid Restore. Restore erases the device completely; without a backup, get a diagnosis before this step.
