Phone fell in water and the speaker does not work: a test list once dry

When a phone falls in water, the speaker often goes quiet because of water in the grille and comes back once dry. Switch the phone off and let it dry; once dry, test the ringtone, music and a speakerphone call in turn. If there is no sound anywhere or crackling continues, the speaker or the board should be checked.

01Dry it first

  1. Switch it off. Turn the phone off as soon as you take it out of the water.
  2. Dry it. Wipe the outside and remove the case.
  3. Turn the grille down. Leave it somewhere airy.
  4. Do not charge. Do not connect a cable until the port is dry.

02Test list once dry

If the crackle fades within a day or two, the water is drying; if it does not, the speaker may need replacing.

03Signs the board is affected too

  • The phone heats up when idle.
  • It will not charge or the charge level is inconsistent.
  • Several functions (sound, network, camera) stopped at once.
