Water spilled on your phone and no sound: which sound is gone?

If there is no sound after water spilled on your phone, first work out which sound is gone: the bottom speaker, the call earpiece or the microphone? Often the problem is water in the speaker grille and it clears as it dries; if not, the part or the board should be checked.

01Which sound is gone?

A phone has several separate sound parts. Finding the affected one shortens the fix:

02What you can try at home

  1. Switch off and dry. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth.
  2. Turn the grilles down. Leave the phone in an airy place with the speaker and microphone holes facing down.
  3. Do not charge. Do not plug in a cable until the port is completely dry.
  4. Test the sound. Once dry, play music, record a voice memo and make a call.

03Why was water resistance not enough?

Ratings such as IP67 or IP68 mean the phone resists water under certain conditions; but this protection can weaken over time, after drops or on devices that have been opened before. Hot water, soapy water and sea water also harm the seals more. So sound parts can be affected even on a water-resistant phone. 04When to bring it in

If sound has not returned after drying, if crackling has started or if sound cuts in and out on calls, the part or the board may be affected. Diagnosis is free and shows whether the speaker, earpiece, microphone or an IC chip repair is needed.
