Water got into your iPhone and there is no sound: test both speakers

On many iPhone models, sound comes not only from the bottom speaker but also from the top earpiece. After water gets in, testing the two speakers separately shows which one is affected. Tap the phone gently with the speaker facing down to let water out and leave it to dry; do not put it in rice.

01Test both speakers separately

  1. Play a sound. Move the ringtone slider under Settings › Sounds & Haptics; a test sound plays.
  2. Cover the bottom one. Cover the bottom grille with your finger; if the sound does not drop, the bottom speaker has gone quiet.
  3. Cover the top one. Cover the top earpiece and compare the same way.
  4. A call. Can you hear callers normally? This tests the earpiece separately.

Menu names can differ slightly by iOS version.

02Drying steps

  • Tap the phone gently against your palm with the speaker facing down; water comes out of the grille.
  • Leave it somewhere dry and airy; if there is a liquid alert at the port, do not plug in a cable.
  • Do not use a hair dryer or heater.
