Water in the phone speaker: what should I do?

With water in the speaker, sound comes out muffled or crackly; dry the outside and leave the phone in a dry, airy place with the speaker and charging port facing down. Sound usually returns as it dries. If there is no sound at all, the liquid was salty or sugary, or the phone gets hot, turn it off and bring it in.

01Step by step

  1. Dry it. Wipe the outside with a soft cloth.
  2. Face it down. Hold the speaker and port downwards and tap gently against your palm.
  3. Leave it. Put it somewhere dry and airy.
  4. Do not charge. If there is a liquid warning or the port is wet, do not plug it in.
  5. Test it. Once dry, play music and check the sound.

Will the sound come back after water in the speaker?

If it is muffled, it usually improves as it dries. If there is no sound or the crackling continues, the speaker should be checked.

Unplug the cable, hold the port facing down and leave it somewhere dry; do not charge while wet.
