iPhone X screen replacement and True Tone: is it kept, how to check

On the iPhone X, True Tone depends on the screen’s own identity and calibration data. If this data is not transferred to the new screen during a replacement, the True Tone option may not appear. Ask about the transfer before approving; at collection, check the True Tone switch under Settings › Display & Brightness.

01Why does True Tone disappear?

A small memory on the screen holds the panel’s identity and calibration data. When a new screen is fitted and the phone does not recognise this data, it may not show the True Tone option. When the old screen’s data is read with a suitable device and written to the new screen, the option comes back. If that part of the old screen is also damaged, the data may not be readable; you are told at diagnosis.

02How to check at collection

  1. Settings › Display & Brightness. Is the True Tone switch there?
  2. Control Centre. Touch and hold the brightness slider; the True Tone button appears there too.
  3. Try it under light. In a room with yellow light, the screen’s tone should change as you turn True Tone on and off.
